Sometimes you can learn a lot from past advice, even if it’s not exactly in line with your industry. Our team came across a 1938 article on safe driving in an outdated manual called “1000 Things Every Man and Woman Should Know.” But we saw so many parallels to our monthly theme #PumpedUpMorale that our heads nearly exploded. Here’s the way to inspire longevity in your team and clients.

1. “Watch your breaks”

Monthly maintenance is necessary to keep your business moving. Make sure all your parts have enough oil to keep them moving—that way they’ll last longer and probably cost less in the long run. The minute you see something wrong with a part, address it. It’s not costly at the time and it may save a lifetime of remorse.

Lesson: Your employees need maintenance too. Keep an eye on how they’re doing and if one department is faltering make sure to address it right away before the problem leaks into the other teams.

2. “Signal Change”

If you’re making a left or right turn, always signal your intention. After you’ve made the change, make sure to address it again, especially when it comes to internal company changes. As the book says: “Attention to these details will prevent many accidents and a lot of profanity.”

Lesson: Big changes to the company, whether it’s structural or procedural should be discussed with your employees so they feel valuable and up-to-date.

3. “Don’t economize on tires”

They’re the base of your business and keep you going. Make sure you have the latest equipment and technology for your employees and replace them before they’re outdated or before the tread wears smooth. This may eliminate the risk of blowouts and reduce skid hazard. Always keep them properly inflated—they’ll take you further.

Lesson: Sometimes you have to splurge a bit to keep the company going.
